NORTHERN LIGHTS

Finnish Northern Lights in focus at Swedish Eurovision Song Contest 2024

"It's quite amusing that they chose a clip from Finnish Lapland," says Alexander Kuznetsov, who filmed the Northern Lights used for the visual identity at ESC 2024 in Malmö – and found via the stock video site Artlist.io.

The 64th edition of the Melodifestivalen 2024 kicks off on February 3rd – aiming to select the entry that will represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, with the final on May 11, 2024.

Prior to the grand final, SVT announces that the main message 'United by Music' is presented in a visual expression shaped by the northern lights: 'It is inspired by the magnificent "Northern lights", whose beauty and mystery have been transformed into "The Eurovision Lights"', states Christel Tholse Willers, executive producer, in a press release.

When Kamera & Bild asks SVT who filmed the northern lights to be used to represent the visual identity for the final held in Sweden, we are told that it is from Artlist.io, a stock site where one can pay to use film clips.

– My clip that was used was filmed outside my house in Rovaniemi, Finland, around 3 AM during the night towards September 26, 2020. There was a strong solar storm going on for several hours. Earlier in the night, I also did a livestream on my YouTube channel.

Alexander sends a screenshot from the night's videos, and also says that not all clips are his, but it seems to be a collage of sequences that have been used, where he recognizes that the third clip is from Cahkal, Kilpisjärvi in Finland.

– It's quite amusing that they chose a clip from Finnish Lapland, and had SVT asked me, I have plenty of amazing Northern Lights clips from Swedish Lapland which I often visit to chase the aurora – just an hour away from Rovaniemi.
