Sony Burano gets more recording modes with new firmware

Sony Burano receives firmware 2.0 which provides new 1.8x de-squeeze and 120 frames per second in 3.8K.

Sony Burano, which is part of Sony's CineAlta range, now receives firmware 2.0. The update provides the camera with new recording formats, including a new 3.8K Full Frame mode that utilizes almost the entire sensor and can shoot at up to 120 frames per second.

A new 1.9K mode can shoot at up to 240 frames per second, allowing for faster image processing with a higher frame rate. Other new recording formats include the addition of 24.00 fps to X-OCN 16:9 image modes:

The software also provides a 1.8x de-squeeze setting and additional high frame rate modes (S & Q), including up to 66, 72, 75, 88, 90, 96, and 110 fps, as well as proxy recording for recording formats with 24.00 fps.

In addition to the new recording formats, version 2.0 offers various improvements in monitoring and metadata, including standardized SDI video output for monitoring in X-OCN and XAVC. Metadata for focus breathing compensation and image stabilization is added to X-OCN, as well as metadata for timecode and clip name in SDI output.

Based on user feedback, version 2.0 will provide an improved screen display that places camera status information outside the image and also includes View Finder Gamma Display Assist when using S-Log3 for monitoring. S-Log3 look or 3D User LUTs. Additionally, version 2.0 will enhance autofocus performance when recording at the following frame rates: 23.98, 24, 25, and 29.97.

Version 2.0 adds 24V output in the PL Mount Voltage menu. Additionally, it adds compatibility with Focus/Iris/Zoom control for PL Mount lenses when using Burano's GP-VR100 handle.

Version 2.0 also includes additional exposure tools (High/Low Key) sourced from the flagship camera system Venice. It will also expand the white balance memory presets from 3 to 8 and support active/high image stabilization in the Full-Frame crop 6K and Super 35 1.9K 16:9 image modes.

New is also the ability to format media from the status screen and set CAM-ID and reel number, which is standard for documentary and reality TV applications.

Features for live events and multicam including variable ND control from RCPs will also be added, as well as improved camera control from Camera Remote SDK and tally control for devices connected via LAN.

The new firmware is scheduled to be released in March 2025.
