Sigma BF - a modern Camera Obscura with full-frame sensor

Sigma's new camera returns to the fundamental design of cameras: simple construction with three buttons, one control, and tactile handling.

At Sigma's press conference in Japan, they are now presenting the compact camera Sigma BF, a simple camera for everyday use - but with simplicity in focus. By rethinking camera design from the ground up, Sigma has minimized distractions for the user. The camera itself is also constructed from a solid piece of aluminum block. The camera is sold in black and silver colors.

- I hope that this update in camera design appeals to everyone who wants a camera for all types of everyday photography, says Sigma's CEO Kazuto Yamaki.

By using only the index finger as the shutter and the thumb on the tactile control on the back along with - only - three buttons, the handling according to Sigma is both quick and simple.

The new user interface has stripped away unnecessary elements to simplify for the user. Among other things, the information you as a photographer receive has changed - the most important settings are available on the live view screen, while other settings are available in an options menu, where more specific settings can be made. Shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation, and color modes can be adjusted with just a fingerprint.

The most important controls are found in a total of three buttons, a dial, and the shutter button (along with the power button). The Sigma BF is also the first mirrorless camera with haptic feedback, which is present in the center button, option button, and playback button.

The autofocus is of a hybrid type that combines phase-detection AF with contrast AF. In subject mode, people, dogs, and cats can be identified.

Video is recorded in 6K/30p in L-Log H.265, 4K/30p, and 1080/120p.

The Sigma BF charges via USB C, which is also the connection for quickly transferring images from the camera as it does not have a memory card slot. The built-in memory is 230 gigabytes, allowing you to store 4,300 raw format images and 2.5 hours of video in the best quality setting. The resolution is 24.6 MP.

The camera also has 13 different color modes that can be adjusted for different characteristics of the images, such as Teal and Orange, Powder Blue, and Warm Gold.

Press release: A radically simple camera that evokes the essence of photography A mirrorless full-frame camera offering an unparalleled intuitive photography experience

By staying close to the photographer, Sigma BF captures the beauty hidden in everyday life and becomes the catalyst for being aware of that beauty.

BF focuses on the joy of photography that a camera as a tool can provide. By simplifying and removing all unnecessary elements, this mirrorless full-frame camera redefines the process of taking a photograph as a natural action.

The unique user interface, which provides a new sense of connection between the photographer and the camera in a truly seamless unibody, is more intuitive than ever with its touch-sensitive haptic buttons and dial. The high-resolution expression of the approximately 24-megapixel full-frame sensor and the reliable dual autofocus system bring your vision to life.

Key Features

Simple, clear, and completely new user interface

The user interface has a completely new information structure compared to conventional digital cameras, with the main photography-related settings stored on the live view screen, secondary settings in the options menu, and management functions and detailed settings in the system menu. Users can easily control shutter speed, aperture, ISO sensitivity, EV compensation, and color mode, along with other important photography-related elements with a fingertip.

In combination with the automatic setting, the functions for the general photography mode dial are also covered.

Clear live view and status monitor

The standard live view screen displays only the most necessary information and can be changed to show no information at all. Since the currently active setting is displayed on the status monitor, users can focus solely on composition and subject on the live view screen.

Minimal controls and haptics

All controls are integrated into just three buttons, one dial, the shutter button, and the power button. BF is the first mirrorless camera* to have haptics in the dial, center button, option button, and playback button, resulting in minimal physical wear. The buttons are always precise and comfortable to press.

Unibody structure

BF is the first camera in history* to have a true unibody, which has unparalleled stability. Each camera is carved from a single, solid block of aluminum over the course of seven hours. The reliable, comfortable weight of its seamless all-metal body harmonizes perfectly with any lens.

Internal storage

BF has 230 GB of internal memory, which can store more than 14,000 JPEG files, 4,300 uncompressed RAW images, or 2.5 hours of video at the highest quality setting, with a USB-C port offering fast charging and data transfer speeds.

Various color modes

Thirteen different color modes are available to open new avenues for creativity. These modes range from unique options like Teal and Orange, Powder Blue, and Warm Gold to creative yet versatile options like Rich and Calm.

Advanced autofocus

A hybrid autofocus system combining phase detection and contrast detection uses state-of-the-art algorithms to capture subjects accurately and reliably. In addition to humans, dogs and cats can be detected in the subject detection mode.

Video recording (6K, L-Log)

BF supports high-resolution 6K and L-Log recording, enabling video production that takes advantage of the wide dynamic range of a full-frame sensor.

Equipped with L-Mount

The L-Mount allows the camera to be used with a variety of interchangeable lenses for mirrorless cameras from Sigma as well as other L-Mount Alliance partners.
