Using generative AI in Photoshop will cost you credits

Many have missed that from January 2024, it will cost "generative credits" to use Adobe's AI features.

With the update to Photoshop 2024 and other programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Adobe Express, the opportunity to use the tools developed within Firefly directly in the current program was also opened.

However, many have missed that it is not entirely free to use the AI functions in the various programs. The price one has to pay when using features like "Generative Fill" to fill in images with AI tools, "Expand" to make images larger, "Recolor" in Illustrator, and "Text to Image" via Firefly - costs so-called "generative credits".

The number of generative credits you have or receive depends on your plan. If you have a free plan where you do not pay for Adobe Firefly, you receive 25 new credits each month. If you have a corporate subscription, the number may be different. If you only pay for Photoshop, you get 500 credits per month, and if you only pay for Lightroom, you get 100 credits per month. You can see how many credits you have in the Creative Cloud app when you press your picture/logo at the top right.

Once the plan-specific number of generative credits is reached, you can continue with generative AI actions to create images in standard resolution, but your use of these generative AI features may be slower. If you want more credits, you must upgrade your payment plan.

For example, a "text to image" costs one (1) credit, which is the same price as using a "generative fill", "generative expansion", "reference image", "generate image", "generate background", and "generate similar content" when using it in Photoshop or via the Firefly interface on the web.

This is how they describe their generative credits:

"Credit consumption applies to standard images up to 2,000 x 2,000 pixels. For the credit consumption mentioned above to apply, you must use the latest version of the software. Adobe Firefly is rapidly evolving. The credit consumption table is updated as we add more features and services. Credit consumption may vary. Plans may change."

According to Adobe, it's not the number of generated results that costs, but how many times an "action" is performed. At the same time, they reveal that they plan to offer high-resolution images, animations, and video, including for 3D, in the future.
