Sony develops medium format sensor with 247 megapixels

Sony now reveals that they are developing a medium format sensor measuring 54 x 36mm – with 247 megapixels.

Sony has just announced that it is currently developing a medium format sensor with 245.76 effective megapixels, resulting in image file resolutions of 19200 x 12800 pixels and a diagonal of 64.84 mm.

The sensor, which is back-illuminated, operates at up to 16 bits, but has built-in handling for 12, 14, or 16 bits through the integrated A/D converter. The sensor is capable of reading out at 5.3 frames per second, which is a high speed considering all the data that needs to be sent from all the pixels to the image processor.

The sensor is also capable of 10.5 frames per second in 14-bit mode, or 12.4 frames per second in 12-bit mode.

Classification at Sony with sensor, sensor size, resolution, and pixel size.

The sensor is presented in two versions: IMX811-AAMR and IMX811-AAQR, where the first one has an RGB mosaic filter, something that is missing from the second sensor.

Whether and when the sensor will be released in cameras is unknown – it may also be reserved for industrial use, something that the developments at Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) often lead to, although we also see them eventually ending up in consumer products.
