The photography competition, which was started in 1965 by the BBC and is held by the Natural History Museum in London, now has a winner – voted from among the 25 final images which were in turn selected by a jury from a total of 50,000 pictures. In total, four images are also named as 'highly commended', which along with the winning image will be exhibited at the Natural History Museum in London until 30 June 2024.
In this year's edition – number 59 in the series – of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year: People's Choice Award, the majority voted for the British photographer Nima Sarikhani's image of a sleeping polar bear.
The image serves as "a powerful reminder of how integral the connection between the animal and its habitat is", explains Douglas Gurr, director of the Natural History Museum in London.
Among the finalists, we also find the Norwegian photographer Audun Rikardsen with his image "Aurora Jellies".
